Navimow: Which model? What size? How long to mow my lawn?

Choosing the right Segway Navimow model for your lawn or property is really easy. But there are a few variables to keep in mind.

For most people the model you choose will be decided upon by how much grass you have to mow.

  • Navimow I-series is intended for lawns of up to 500 or 800 square meters (i105 or i108)
  • Navimow H-series is intended for lawns of up to 800, 1500 or 3000 square meters (H800, H1500, H3000)

Quickly estimate the area of your lawn with our "rough and ready" method of stepping it out and assuming each big stride is 1m. Sketch a general diagram of your lawn as a collection of rectangles (and perhaps triangles and circles), do some simple maths with the distances you've stepped out and — bingo! — you have the approximate area of your lawn. Yes, you can use a tape measure or a phone App if you like, but pacing it out will probably give you a good enough idea of the area of lawn you have to enable you to pick between models.

If your area is approaching the maximum specification of a particular model it is a good idea to pick the next model up. This is simply a good investment in the future, as the larger model will last longer and finish a mowing cycle quicker (we explain why later in this article).

Two rectangles and a triangle give a pretty good estimate of the lawn area of this property

The second step is to decide what features and capabilities you need. For example, the H-series can climb steeper hills than the I-series (24 degrees vs 16 degrees), so if your property is steep then H-series is the model you need. The H-series is also a little quieter (54dB vs 58dB).

All Navimow models have Bluetooth and WiFi built in. Once set up all models can be started and stopped by using the buttons on the console, or via the Navimow App within Bluetooth range.

All models can be operated remotely from anywhere in the world via the Navimow App if the Charging Station is within WiFi range of your home router. Yes, you'll be able to start a mowing session and adjust functions via the App from the beach in Bali. Don't worry if the mower roams out of WiFi range at the far reaches of your lawn, Navimow will still continue to operate normally (it doesn't need WiFi to work). But while outside WiFi range functions such as watching the icon of the mower on the map colouring in the area mowed will not be updated in real time. Nor will you be able to adjust settings or send Navimow back to the Charging Station until it is back in WiFi Range.

If you do want to operate all features of i-series from anywhere in the world, all of the time, plus get the Security and Find My Mower functionality then you will want to add the Access+ accessory. This is a small plug-in box that brings 4G wireless capability to your I-series. Access+ includes 1 year of unlimited data, after that you can renew for about $55 per year (the fee is charged as AUD$49.90).

All H-series models have 4G built in, so you get all of the above capabilities without the need to add the Access+ accessory. H800 and H1500 come with 1 year unlimited data and H3000 comes with 3 years.

Navimow is guaranteed to keep the specified area nicely mowed even during the fastest grass growing seasons. It is possible to map up to 20% more area than spec'd but don't expect it to always keep up, especially if you don't want your Navimow to operate when its raining or at night. Also, it may not keep up as the battery ages (but don't worry, a replacement battery is super-easy to install at home).

Our recommendation is if your mowing area is approaching the specified maximum then choose the model with the next-largest mowing area. What this means is the mower has a larger battery. And there is another reason we make this recommendation - the larger battery will mean a full mowing cycle (ie 100% of your lawn is mowed) is completed in a shorter time.

That's right, everyone wants to know how long it will take for Navimow to mow their lawnn.

It's a simple question but the full answer does depend on a few things. So let's explore this. When a mowing cycle begins Navimow will (usually) be fully recharged. It goes out from the Charging Station, mows until nearly flat, returns and recharges, then goes out and continues mowing from where it left off. This process continues until your lawn is 100% mown. How many charge-mow cycles this takes depends upon:

  • the size of the battery inside your Navimow
  • the area of your lawn
  • the complexity of your lawn (a plain rectangle is quick to mow, while a property with many different lawn areas connected by channels and lots of trees or garden beds is slower to mow)
  • the grade of your lawn (flat lawns take the least energy to mow, steeper lawns use flatten the battery quicker because of....well, you know, those pesky laws of physics such as gravity)
  • the length of the grass and its toughness (which varies across the seasons)

Navimow will of course mow a small lawn on less than a single charge, if you choose a model with a battery far over-spec'd for your lawn. But this is not what most people do.

Want to know how long it will take to mow your lawn with various H-series models? Here's a chart that tells you all (for i-series the i108 performs similar to the H800, and the i105 is about half that).
