About 9 years ago Segway NZ News published Renewables now 79% of NZ electricity generation (December 2014). Using the latest data from that period we developed a pie chart to illustrate what percentage was being generated by each type of generation (hydro, geothermal, gas, wind, coal, wood).
Last month, August 2023, MBIE released a report showing that in 2023 renewable electricity generation increased to 87%. We'll develop a pie chart from these updated figures shortly, and add to this story then.
The Government of New Zealand has established a target is to reach 100% renewable generation by 2030 (refer NZ's Electricity Authority website here).
In the meantime, a key takeaway from our December 2014 story remains true: if you recharge your Segway device overnight (ideally from 11pm onwards) then almost 100% of the electricity at that time of the day is being generated from renewable resources.
